Read Romans 1:18-2:16
I thought this was interesting when I read this about a week ago. I have always been bothered at how we view sin. We too often see certain sins as greater than others, while we go on committing other sins that we think are not as bad. There are some sins that we see as disgusting, yet others that we see that we think, well it's not so bad if I do it once or twice.
First of all I believe that we sin when we refuse to see God in the situation, but instead see only what we desire and what we think that we need. In the above scripture God warns us of this by giving examples of what happens when people refuse to give him glory and refuse to recognize him, even though he makes himself obvious to us everyday. "For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God, nor gave thanks to Him..."-v21
When we refuse to see God it is because of our selfish desires that get in the way. All of us are guilty of sinning, yet most of you reading probably do not have darkened hearts, and hopefull never will. But we must be careful how we view sin, and that means all sin. As the scripture goes on Paul shares how women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones, and men began lusting after each other.(disgusting to think that someone could do that, huh.) But wait...he goes on to say that they became murderers(again, how could someone do that?) and then he says that they became envious, greedy, deceitful, malicious, disobedient, senseless. And later on in Ch. 2:11 it says that God does not show favortism. WOW! I don't know about you but that cut deep to read that. My sins are as worse as the man who lusts after another man, or someone who murders someone else. When I am envious, or when I lie or I gossip I am no better, even though the consequences of my sin seem less. When you think that your sin is not as bad as others, that is when you begin to be trapped by that sin.
Why can't we look at all sin the same. Why are we disgusted when someone is found to be a murderer, or an adulterer, or a homosexual, yet we think it not so bad if someone is a liar, or a gossiper, or disobedient, and we brush those off to the side. I know that if we first of all recognize that God is everywhere, and he is obvious, and we see all sin as disgusting, and vile, and evil, I know that we will be more willing to do what is right, to obey God, and give him the glory that he is due. Let's repent of all of our sins, not just certain ones.
When we look at all sin the same then we will realize that we need to reach everyone, even if it seems disgusting, how they live. We must reach even the seemingly worst sinners with the message of the gospel that was so graciously given to us, sinners as well.
